About Bridging Open Work Permit

Bridging open work permit is a work permit for applicants who applied for their permanent residency and will expire in the next 4 months.

Before the expiry of the work permit, they can apply for the open work permit which is called Bridging open work (BOWP) to restore their valid status in Canada.

Basically, those candidates can apply for bridging open work permits that are on a work permit that is going to expire within 4 months and have applied for their permanent residency under the economic class.

Moreover, children and spouses are not eligible for bridging open work permits. The only main applicant is eligible for BOWP who has valid status in Canada and submitted their file for permanent residency.

In addition to that, dependent children and spouses must obtain the LMIA or LMIA exemption work permit based on their situation and status in Canada.

Some requirements need to be met before applying for a bridging open work permit (BOWP).

To become eligible for a bridging open work permit,

  • Applicants must be currently living in Canada and enter as temporary residents in Canada.
  • At the time of application, applicants must have valid status in Canada.
  • Applicants must submit the application for permanent residency under the following programs
    • Permanent residency using Express Entry
    • Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)
    • Quebec skilled workers
    • Home Child-Care Provider Pilot or Home Support Worker Pilot
    • Caring for children class or caring for people with high medical needs class
    • Agri-Food Pilot
  • Bridging open work permit is the exemption code for Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA).

Specific Requirements for bridging open work permit under different Permanent Residency Programs

There are some specific requirements for BOWP under different permanent residency programs.

Provincial Nominees Program (PNP) Eligibility

Applicants are only eligible for bridging open work permits if

  • They provide a copy of the nomination letter issued by the province. The nomination letter states that “your employment is unrestricted”. It means there is no employment restriction on you. Then you are eligible to apply for BOWP.

Agri-Food Pilot Program Eligibility

If you applied for permanent residency under the agri-food pilot then you are eligible for BOWP if

  • you provide the approval letter in the “client informing” field when applying for the online work permit application.
